Exercise in Water – knowing its benefits
We all know that exercise is good for us but did you also know that swimming and/or exercising in water also has an endless amount of health benefits?
It is enjoyable, it can aid individuals with a number of medical conditions and the water helps to increase flexibility and decrease muscular and joint pain.
Exercising in very warm water is referred to as ‘Hydrotherapy’. This involves exercising in a warm water pool that has a temperature which is considerably higher than in normal swimming pools.
The warmth of the water relaxes the muscles, buoyancy assists or resists movement and the weightlessness decreases pain and stress on the joints.
Aquatic exercise in warm water also has the following benefits:
- It helps to reduce blood pressure and the risk of injury
- It reduces stress
- The water helps to support and massage the body as you exercise
- It strengthens breathing muscles
- Kidneys become more efficient
- It provides you with all of the benefits of land exercise – without feeling the sweat!
