Priya, a registered dietitian and nutritionist with a passion for inspiring healthy living, qualified in 2005 with a degree in nutrition and an MSc in Dietetics. After working in the NHS for 7 years she now runs Dietitian UK, a freelance nutrition business.

Her NHS background includes experience in stroke, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, gastroenterology and eating disorders and her freelance career has been varied involving media work, work with food companies and giving advice on all kinds of dietary issues.

Her business won a Theo Paphitis SBS Award in January 2012.

“As a dietitian I am available to give expert advice on issues including IBS, coeliac disease, weaning, family meals, special diets such as wheat/dairy intolerances, weight loss, eating disorders and more.

Although research into children’s sleep is relatively new, recent studies amongst school children confirm that as little as 1 – 2 hours less sleep a night can alter a child’s academic performance by 2 – 6 years, as well as affecting their behaviour. Similarly sleep deprivation can impact on the entire family and it is sometimes not just the child who is most affected. Better sleep increases concentration, reaction time, decision-making skills, language skills and memory consolidation, and, as well as many other things, helps to organise our thoughts.

It is Behavioural Insomnia that is responsible for a huge percentage of children’s sleep issues. Problems such as bedtime resistance, night time bottles/feeding, settling, night-waking, sleep terrors, sleep walking, nightmares, night fears, early waking, restlessness and insomnia can all now be treated in our new Sleep Clinic.

If your child is experiencing any of these problems then give us a call for a clinic appointment or to arrange a telephone consultation. A sleep diary and questionnaire will be sent to you to fill in which will then be followed by a 1-2 hour consultation. If we suspect a medical cause for your child’s symptoms, for example OSA, Christina will refer you and your child to your GP, who may decide onward referral to an ENT specialist is necessary. Otherwise a diagnosis will be made and you will be given a Sleep Management Programme during which time you may send unlimited e-mails and have two follow-up calls with Christina.

Christina also holds Sleep Workshops at LBhealthcare. These are carried out on Saturdays and consist of a 2 hour session which includes learning about how sleep works, the different problems that can occur and how to solve them. Samantha qualified as a physiotherapist from Liverpool University in 1995 and has worked in the NHS for over 15 years. For the last 13 years she has worked at St Georges Hospital in London where she specialised in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, working in the A&E department as an Extended Scope Practitioner and then Principal Physiotherapist at their satellite clinic, St Johns Therapy centre. She also has experience working with rugby teams and at the London Marathon.

In 2009 Samantha completed a postgraduate course to become a qualified member of the Manipulative Association of Chartered Physiotherapists. She is trained to carry out acupuncture and is a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists.

Mark qualified as a radiographer in 2003 whilst in the Royal Navy. He specialised in medical ultrasound in 2005 and went on to use these skills in Afghanistan, Iraq and at sea in the Royal Navy floating medical facility RFA Argus.

An unwanted medical discharge in 2009 found Mark joining the NHS where he honed his ultrasound skills and expanded his knowledge to include musculoskeletal ultrasound. He completed a postgraduate qualification in this subject and subsequently joined the private sector as a specialised MSK mobile sonographer working in a variety of NHS, and private environments.

“In my current role I run a complete radiology service including X-Ray, CT, MRI and ultrasound for a local treatment centre. My professional interests include the appropriate and safe training in ultrasound of other non-imaging professionals, multi-disciplinary teams and point of care ultrasound. I decided to join LBhealthcare as, after many years in a variety of health care environments and settings, I wanted to be a part of a diverse group of medical professionals in a more community based setting.”

“When I am not working I enjoy running, gym work and assisting my wife in teaching our two boys table manners and the benefits of a varied and healthy diet!”

Mark will be available at LBhealthcare to carry out general medical ultrasound scans such as abdominal, pelvic, renal, musculoskeletal, thyroid, groin, testes and any other minor lumps and bumps.

Aimed at children of all ages, our new Hydrotherapy sessions are a relaxed and fun way to help your child to develop a sense of wellbeing and confidence in a warm, friendly environment in one of the UK’s largest Hydrotherapy Pools here at LBhealthcare.

Whether your child has a developmental delay, a neurological condition or is simply recovering from injury, experienced Paediatric Physiotherapist, Verity Boord, is offering sessions tailored to your child’s specific and individual requirements.

Very careful direction is required to ensure young muscles and growing bones are not overly pushed, and children with more severe disabilities need extra special care. Exercising in the warmth and support of the water helps to strengthen muscles, ease pain and muscle tightness, improve mobility, active movement, circulation and physical fitness. It also improves core stability, body control and posture, challenges balance and co-ordination and aids weight bearing (or non-weight bearing) depending on the needs of your child.

Even babies love the pool, which is maintained at a balmy 34°C. Kicking their feet and splashing to their heart’s content, children often surprise everyone at what they can do when free and having fun in the water.

Getting the whole family involved can also be paramount in a child’s day-to-day happiness and success. With that in mind all parents or carers may join their child for fun and games in the pool too.

As with adults, children can respond extremely well to hydrotherapy – their treatment just has to be about having fun. Teenagers, school children, toddlers and babies – if you want them to grow up strong, happy and confident, get them moving!

All sessions are carried out by our in-house Counsellor, Clive Lubert and will be based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapies and will cover a variety of emotional support requirements.

The first session will include an Initial Assessment and will be of 1½ hours duration. Subsequent sessions will be of 45 minutes duration.

All sessions are priced at £45 payable before the session commences.

Appointments are usually one week apart, but this is not prescriptive and discretion will be used.

Mr Andrew James Cossey FRCS, MBBS is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Queen Alexandra Hospital and Spire Portsmouth Hospital and also runs a private practice in Havant and at LBhealthcare, Whiteley. Mr Cossey’s medical school training was at Kings College, London and after qualifying he spent the first two years of his training in London gaining experience in accident and emergency and also demonstrating anatomy at St George’s Medical School. He then went to Wessex having been accepted on a Basic Surgical Training programme. Having completed this, he was awarded a registrar rotation in trauma and orthopaedics in the same region. He gained valuable experience working for many experienced surgeons and was awarded his FRCS (Tr & Orth), being placed on the GMC specialist register of orthopaedic surgeons in 2005.

What is Core Stability?

The core muscles contract to hold the spine in a safe and neutral position. They can be regarded as our stabilisers if you like! They assist us with our posture and day-to-day movement. Whether you are an elite athlete or you have a job where you are sitting or standing all day, lifting or moving objects, it is important that these muscles are conditioned and strong enough to help support your lower back. These muscles can often get over looked and can sometimes be missed during a regular workout.

When people go to the gym they tend to exercise the body in straight lines, pushing weights, running, x-trainer, bike, stepper, etc. In real life, we twist and turn, walk or run on uneven ground, cycle on bumpy roads, bend down to pick up that piece of paper off the floor. This is when an injury can occur. We can help prevent this by having a strong core to protect us.

Here at LBhealthcare we now run Core Stability classes where you will primarily learn how to activate your core muscles. Then over a series of weeks, we will progress the exercises to challenge your muscles using the gym ball. The gym ball will really challenge your balance and co-ordination, we will do exercises sitting on it, laying on it and even leaning against it. You will eventually progress to the use of resistance bands while working on the ball.

The sessions will be fun, structured and coached by our Sports Therapist, Darren who comments “Core Stability Training can help improve posture, balance, co-ordination and all round body strength. Regular style sit ups work the superficial stomach muscles but it’s the stabilisers we need to activate to look after our lower backs.”
