Pam will join Dawn Tomlin to offer an additional Ultrasound Clinic on Tuesday evenings from 3rd January 2012.

Pam, who also works in the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit at Southampton Hospital, graduated from West Mercia School of Radiography in 1985. She initially worked in the Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound Department at The Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey, before taking a post at The Hillingdon Hospital, Uxbridge in 1986, where she remained for 8 years. She obtained her Diploma of Medical Ultrasound in 1990 and began specialising in obstetric studies.

In 1994 Pam began a 7 year post, co-ordinating the maternity ultrasound services at Princess Margaret Hospital, Swindon, where she also trained ultrasound students from the Armed Forces. Her experience in obstetrics and teaching then led her to join the research team as Superintendent Sonographer of part of the largest study of women’s health and lifestyle carried out in the UK, The Southampton Women’s Survey.

Pam gained her Masters Degree in Osteoarchaeology from the University of Southampton in 2002 and her PhD in 2007.

Pam leads a very busy life – her own research centres on fetal skeletal development and vitamin D in pregnancy and she continues to act as a human bone specialist for archaeological research. In her spare time Pam loves to cook and regularly holds dinner parties. She also sings in a well-established rock band “For The Record” with her husband Tom Smith.

“I am looking forward to joining LBhealthcare,” says Pam. “Scanning in a new environment will be a pleasure as it differs from the research and hospital setting. I get great satisfaction from scanning and showing families their babies at such an exciting time; interacting with families is so enjoyable, especially when the scan alleviates any worries.”

Pam begins work at LBhealthcare on Tuesday 3rd January with a new Ultrasound Clinic from 6.00pm – 8.00pm.

At LBhealthcare we offer a comprehensive range of ultrasound scans including the amazing 4D Baby Bonding Scans. For further information look at our Baby Scanning Page; to book an appointment call us on 01489 569888 or email admin@lbhealthcare.co.uk.

LBhealthcare will be holding its second free Saebo Assessment Day on Tuesday 13th December from 10.00am – 1.45pm at the clinic in Whiteley.

Saebo Inc. is the leading global provider of innovative rehabilitation products for stroke survivors and neurologically impaired individuals. The company’s ground-breaking neurological orthotic devices, SaeboFlex and SaeboReach, allow patients with very poor residual arm and hand function to begin rehabilitation immediately following a stroke.

“These made to measure splints are designed to exercise the arm and hand, assisting grasp and release activities. Research has shown that this repeated exercise encourages new pathways to develop in the brain and can promote recovery of the arm and hand,” says LBhealthcare’s Senior Neurophysiotherapist and qualified Saebo Clinician, Helen Pound.

If you have suffered a neurological injury that has left you with limited movement in your arm and hand then Saebo may benefit you. The time since your injury is not a factor as patients have shown functional improvement as much as 20 years after the event.

Hosting the Assessment Day along with Helen will be Neurophysiotherapist Katie Castle and the Clinical Specialist from Saebo, Amy Bean.

If you are interested in finding out more about Saebo you can look at their website here. You can also see for yourself how Saebo has benefitted several stroke victims on YouTube.

For more information on the Assessment Day or to book a place call LBhealthcare on 01489 569888 or e-mail admin@lbhealthcare.co.uk.

Exercising in the warmth and support of the water helps to strengthen muscles, ease pain and muscle tightness, improve mobility, active movement, circulation and physical fitness.

We are delighted to announce a the launch of new Counselling service at LBhealthcare.

Whatever the reason, people sometimes need to talk. We pride ourselves on the simple art of listening to you. Very often, the solutions to everyday matters of concern become much clearer once you have expressed them to someone else. We affirm never to judge you, nor influence you to make any decisions about your life that you are not comfortable with. You can trust that we will listen to you with empathy, operating in an ethical and discreet fashion, making you aware of mechanisms that will allow you to regain emotional equilibrium and ultimately live better.

Our Therapeutic Alliance is based on mutual trust, unconditional positive regard and probity – our remit is “simply solving people” – and this we will do, together.

All sessions are carried out by our in-house Counsellor, Clive Lubert and will be based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapies and will cover a variety of emotional support requirements.

The first session will include an Initial Assessment and will be of 1½ hours duration. Subsequent sessions will be of 45 minutes duration.

All sessions are priced at £45 payable before the session commences.

Appointments are usually one week apart, but this is not prescriptive and discretion will be used.

Clive said “I am delighted to be offering my services at LBhealthcare. The environment, including so many elements of the healthcare professions, is well suited to counselling.”

Starting on Tuesday 5th January we are running Core Stability (Gym Ball) classes.

What is Core Stability?

The core muscles contract to hold the spine in a safe and neutral position. They can be regarded as our stabilisers if you like! They assist us with our posture and day-to-day movement. Whether you are an elite athlete or you have a job where you are sitting or standing all day, lifting or moving objects, it is important that these muscles are conditioned and strong enough to help support your lower back. These muscles can often get over looked and can sometimes be missed during a regular workout.

When people go to the gym they tend to exercise the body in straight lines, pushing weights, running, x-trainer, bike, stepper, etc. In real life, we twist and turn, walk or run on uneven ground, cycle on bumpy roads, bend down to pick up that piece of paper off the floor. This is when an injury can occur. We can help prevent this by having a strong core to protect us.

Here at LBhealthcare we now run Core Stability classes where you will primarily learn how to activate your core muscles. Then over a series of weeks, we will progress the exercises to challenge your muscles using the gym ball. The gym ball will really challenge your balance and co-ordination, we will do exercises sitting on it, laying on it and even leaning against it. You will eventually progress to the use of resistance bands while working on the ball.

The sessions will be fun, structured and coached by our Sports Therapist, Darren who comments “Core Stability Training can help improve posture, balance, co-ordination and all round body strength. Regular style sit ups work the superficial stomach muscles but it’s the stabilisers we need to activate to look after our lower backs.”

If you would like to have a go at working those muscles that maybe you didn’t know you had, why not give it a try?

For enquiries about our 6 week Wednesday afternoon Core Stability course, or to book a class why not contact Darren at LBhealthcare on 01489-569888 or e-mail admin@lbhealthcare.co.uk

We are pleased to announce that we now offer traditional acupuncture at LBhealthcare.

Traditional acupuncture as practised by the acupuncturists at LBhealthcare, members of the British Acupuncture Council, is based on Chinese medicine principles that have been developed, researched and refined for over 2,500 years. Traditional acupuncture is holistic, not focussed on isolated symptoms. It regards pain and illness, whether physical or mental, to be a sign that the whole body is out of balance.

Acupuncture works

Acupuncture is a tried and tested system of complementary medicine. The Chinese and other eastern cultures have been using acupuncture to restore, promote and maintain good health for thousands of years.

Acupuncture is now widely used and accepted all over the world and in the UK there are currently nearly 3,000 qualified acupuncturists registered with the British Acupuncture Council, our professional body.

Therapy Manager Rob Edmondson said “I believe this is an important addition to our therapeutic offer at LBhealthcare. We offer a number of complementary therapies and traditional acupuncture will I am sure prove to be an important part of that offer.”

Caroline Curnock has just joined LBhealthcare in Whiteley practising Shiatsu and Acupuncture.

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing full body massage therapy which originated in Japan. It is based on the same principles as acupuncture but, instead of using needles, the therapist uses finger pressure together with gentle manipulations and stretches to balance the body’s energy and maintain good health, enhancing vitality and stamina.

How does Shiatsu work?

Oriental theory describes the world in terms of energy; everything is a manifestation of the vital force called qi which flows through the body like a system of rivers, called meridians. Imbalances in the natural flow of energy can lead to physical, psychological or emotional disorders. Shiatsu works to balance these energies through working along the meridians, tonifying any deficiency, sedating excess and bringing the body back to equilibrium, removing any knotted areas and relieving pain.

Who Can Benefit from Shiatsu?

The treatment is very gentle and is suitable for people of all ages, Common conditions which can be helped by Shiatsu include back pain, headaches, migraines, whiplash injuries and neck stiffness, joint pain, menstrual problems, digestive problems, asthmatic symptoms, sports injuries, depression and stress.

What happens in a treatment?

Each treatment is tailored to the individual’s needs. A full case history is taken at the outset and this is followed by an appropriate treatment. Shiatsu is performed through clothing on a futon on the floor, or on a chair if necessary. It is best to wear loose fitting trousers and a top. Sessions last approximately 50 minutes.

Findings from the European Shiatsu Federation research study at the University of Leeds found that 89% of Shiatsu receivers felt calmer and more relaxed, up to 60% of regular Shiatsu receivers slept better, receivers rated their symptoms as significantly reduced throughout the 6 month study and 86% said that Shiatsu was effective in treating stress and tension, structural and postural problems, low energy and fatigue.

Therapy Manager, Rob Edmondson, commented “We are delighted that this therapy is now available at LBhealthcare in Whiteley.”
